FC Metz’ defender and former Tottenham Hotspur’s Benoit Assou-Ekotto seems to be bothered by PSG and FIFA star player Kylian Mbappe. 34-year-old Assou-Ekotto expressed on Twitter in the beginning of 2018 that Mbappe is not walking his talk with regards to caring about his African heritage.
The two players are actually both French-born players with parents from Cameroon with a mix of Algerian descent. What differentiates the two is that the former Tottenham full-back decided to play for his birthplace.
In a meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron and the Liberian president George Weah, the FIFA award-winning footballer expressed his desire to honor his family’s roots. He claims it was a way to help and develop the football industry in Africa.
Assou-Ekotto scoffs at Mbappe’s statement with a sarcastic tweet stating: “European players of African origin who hold Africa in their hears and who want to help the sport in Africa… blah, blah, blah… while rushing to play for a European national team make me chuckle.”
Mbappe relied to the tweet saying “It looks good when you have a cause though.” This just gave Assou-Ekotto all the more reason to reopen then debate again with the RMC. Assou-Ekotto reveals in a statement “Yes, you love Africa, but you never go there. So what’s the story? Yes, you love your wife, but you go out with another. It’s a game I know, manipulate public opinion, blah, blah blah.”
